PK’s Ponderings

Evolution and the Ear

As some of you know, I have been dealing with a stopped up ear for a little over a week now.  My doctor wisely began a round of antibiotics, thinking that I had an infection.  Well, as things did not get any better after a few days, my doctor decided to send me over to an ENT.  Now, for future reference, there are two things I don’t like doctors poking around in: one is my mouth (honestly, nothing against dentists – I just don’t like the sounds and stimulations involved in such a visit) and the other is my ears (a rash of childhood ear infections will make you prone to this feeling).

Well, it turns out that there was a fungus growing on my ear drum.  Now, I know what you are thinking – “Egads!  PK, take a shower every once in a while – and use the soap and washcloth!”.  Indeed, I quickly assured the doctor of my practice of personal hygiene and with a smile, he assured me he thought no less of me and that it was a common occurrence, aggravated by the frequent use of cotton swabs which remove needed acidity from around the ear drum.  After threatening my life if I ever touched a cotton swab again and obtaining a written guarantee against such, he pressure-washed my ear drum, treated it with what felt like battery acid, and prescribed some drops and sent me on my way down the road of recovery.

Now, what does all of this have to do with the theory of evolution?  Good question!  I’m glad you asked.

While sitting in the ENT’s office, I noticed that the walls were covered with medical drawings of various parts of the human anatomy.  In this case, gigantic renderings of the ear, nose, nasal cavities, throat, and larynx were hung with detailed descriptions as to what was being shown.  I’ve always marveled at the intricacies of the human body and I found myself mesmerized at the drawings, particularly with one on the ear, similar to this one below:

As I was looking at the picture, my thoughts turned to praise – “What a wonderful Creator who would be so detailed and specific in all His creations!  There’s no way the design of that ear could just ‘happen’ as the evolutionist suggests”.

Indeed, imagine, according to the evolutionist, the one-celled organism floating around the sea suddenly saying to itself with it’s not-yet-created mouth, “Gee, I wish I could hear the stuff around me!  If it couldn’t hear, how would it even know that it needed to develop an entire hearing system for the sake of survival?   Oh, I’m sure some would respond, that our great one-celled ancestor could feel the vibrations of sound waves around it, and therefore respond to the need to develop an organ to better comprehend such vibrations.  But do we really think, that even in an infinite number of years such a one-celled organism could really evolve into anything like a human being with all the intricate designs of the major bodily systems, much less an ear all by itself?  Never!  It just couldn’t happen by chance.  No, if you are going to tell me that such a thing is true – I won’t hear of it!  And even if I did, I wouldn’t be able to believe my ears!

And since the Lord has seen fit to give us an ear, He also desires that we should use it properly, as the following verses attest:

Deut. 6:4  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Psalm 34:2  My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.

Psalm 66:16  Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for my soul.

Psalm 95:7-8a  For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.  Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts . . .

Luke 11:28  But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

Rev. 2:7  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.'

Rev. 2:11  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.'

Rev. 2:17  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.  To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.
